District 127 Students Explore the World (and earn credit while doing so!)

District 127 works to provide relevant, authentic and engaging learning experiences for students.  One of the many ways we do that is through our Exploring World Cultures Class. This summer, District 127’s Exploring World Cultures -- a class that culminates in a summer trip abroad -- successfully completed its ninth year.  While students and teachers left for this year’s trip at the end of May, once-a-month Sunday evening classes actually started back in January. Students learned about Greek history, art, drama, theater, and cuisine in a truly cross-curricular class experience led by D127 fine arts, history, FCS, and English teachers.

After six Sunday sessions (with some other classroom hours mixed in), students departed for Athens on May 22.  On their first day abroad, students took a walking tour of Athens, visiting some of the city’s ancient ruins before participating in an authentic Greek cooking class.  Later in the trip, students boarded the ship Olympia for a cruise that would take them to the islands of Mykonos, Samos, Patmos, Heraklion, and Santorini.  After cruising the Aegean, students returned back to Athens, which served as homebase as they explored the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Epidaurus open-air theater, Delphi, a working olive farm, and so much more.

In the summer of 2019, Exploring World Cultures is excited to be travelling to Portugal and Spain, and the summer after that, South Africa.
