FAQs

What is the AAPPL exam?
The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages measures how well you read, write, speak and listen to a language other than English. It is not timed but generally takes 3 to 4 hours for a student to finish all 4 sections.

Why take the AAPPL exam?
The exam provides a nationally recognized score of your language skills in a language other than English. The state of Illinois offers the Seal of Biliteracy for students with an English SAT score of 480 or higher and an AAPPL exam score of Intermediate High (I5) or higher. Illinois state colleges offer credit for your Seal score. Ask your university for more information. In addition, your score can be listed on job applications, resumes, college applications and on professional online profiles. It showcases your skills; it’s not just a test score.

I got the Seal but what does that mean?
Earning the Seal gets you a physical Seal on your diploma at graduation, and recognition on your transcripts that you have earned the Seal in a particular language. In addition, Illinois state colleges offer credit for your Seal score. Ask your university for more information. See Why take the AAPPL exam? for more benefits.

Where are my results?
Your test is scored by a computer for the listening and reading portions, and by a human for the speaking and writing portions. It takes up to 4 weeks for the human grading to be completed, especially in the spring. As soon as your scores are available, you’ll receive your test results with a guide to understanding your score.
