Take a 360 degree view of the spaces at Grayslake North that are in need of improvement.
The only performance space at Grayslake North, except for the gym
Seats max 120 theatre-goers.
Student Cast and Company size are limited
Scene Shop is essentially also the performance space. This leads to fewer Technical Skills and Practices such as lighting, sound, and special effects.
Production types and sizes are drastically limited.
Unable to host Fine Art/ Theatre, Band/Choir/Dance events for the school, District, and community
We cannot teach the full scale of these industry-based skills based on space limits. (Small engines, woods, metals)
We cannot offer certifications that some schools offer due to space limitations.
Students can take basic-level classes and then must go to the Lake County Tech Campus to advance their learning.
Equipment cannot be the same due to lathes and CNC machines, because of space limitations, like we can offer at Grayslake Central.
Safety is a huge consideration because we cannot safely teach the courses that we could run in a dedicated Technical Education Space.
Some work is done outside (cutting with saws, etc.) because the classroom spaces do not exist at North).
North and Central foods rooms are very comparable in this instance (C217 looks like Culinary Labs at Central).
C223 is a recent modification (2014) to make the space ADA-compliant. Neither C217 Central kitchens are ADA compliant and therefore are not able to serve students of all abilities.
We currently teach students to cook using a Home Ec model, not the industry-based standards of commercial kitchens.
Students learn the basic skills and then must transfer to Lake County Tech Campus to gain any industry-standard certifications.
In addition to learning to cook for themselves and their families, the future of culinary instruction is to teach students in a commercial-style kitchen where they learn career skills and earn certifications.
