“Help is here when you need it.” That’s the message Joe Alger, Prevention and Wellness Coordinator at Grayslake North, wants every student to hear.

Grayslake North has opened the new Wellness Center on Monday, October 6—a calming, sensory-focused space where students can find support in moments of stress or emotional overwhelm. Complete with flexible seating, soothing lighting, and supportive staff, the space is designed to be accessible to all students, whether they need a quick reset or ongoing support.

The idea was sparked by Associate Principal Megan Light, who had seen similar efforts in other districts. Alger and the student services team brought it to life, creating a space that prioritizes student wellness and meets them where they are.

Students can drop in as needed or visit on a scheduled basis, with each visit beginning with a quick check-in form to help staff track trends and provide targeted support. On Wednesdays, the space will also host small group sessions, with flexibility to adapt as needs evolve.

“This is a space we’ll grow with,” said Alger. “Our goal is to create comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging.”

More than just a room, the Wellness Center reflects Grayslake District 127’s broader commitment to supporting the whole student, empowering them with tools for emotional regulation, resilience, and well-being.

As the center officially opens, the message is clear: Help is here when you need it.
