At Grayslake North, this year’s Homecoming was more than a celebration; it was proof of what happens when students take the lead. From choosing the theme to building new traditions, students played a central role in shaping a week filled with energy, pride, and a sense of community.
Student Council kicked things off by pairing the boys soccer “Pack the Place” game with a large bonfire and student-run s’mores station. The change drew record numbers of freshmen and sophomores while still packing the stands with upperclassmen, creating a night that truly had something for everyone.
The pep rally got a major boost from a new professional DJ/MC team, who previewed their work during lunch periods and then kept the rally energized from start to finish. “There were no dead moments,” said Student Council Co-Adviser Ashley Kopecky. “Students were on their feet the whole time; it showed they still love these traditions when they’re done right.”
Students also chose the Masquerade dance theme through Instagram polls that drew more than 500 votes. On dance night, nearly half of the students arrived wearing masks, showcasing their creativity and school spirit.
The tradition of honoring Golden Knights also highlighted student voice, with nominees first suggested by teachers and then selected by peers. This year’s honorees included juniors Joey C. and Bella H., and seniors Ricky C. and Deajonna C., students celebrated for their positivity, resilience, and leadership.
For Kopecky, the impact of Homecoming is about more than school spirit. “High school should be about more than academics,” she said. “These are the moments students will remember, the ones that make them feel like they truly belong.”
